View from My Window

a quick little watercolor sketch of the view from our window, just off our varanda...we feel like we're on vacation, love it & enjoy having coffee with this view every morning (this painting doesn't do it justice). I think I plan to do several interpretations of this view.

our new treehouse

We're moving to a "tree house" by the lake, so for the rest of this week and into next, we'll be moving & getting settled in, so no art will be done. That's our studio over to the left. Can't wait until we've got it set up & we both can start painting again!

Midnight Horse

This started as a demo for my art appreciation class. We worked with the cheapest of supplies (watercolor paint from Walmart, styrofoam plates) and created prints. Just for fun, I took this one a little further & added Prismacolor.

Bree, a tabby cat

This little watercolor painting is in response to Daily Paint Works challenge "Value". You're restricted to only three values (no color), and you're encouraged to work from life. This was definitely a challenge, because I did work from life, and Bree, our grey tabby was snoozing until the phone rang. This piece is available as an original watercolor painting on a 5" x 6-1/2" greeting card w/envelope.

Rootin' Around

original watercolor on 5" x 6-1/2" greeting card w/envelope. This piece was done for Daily Paint Works' challenge called "Paint Your Pig". I searched & finally found an old photo that I'd taken of a piglet "rooting around" in the pine shavings at a sale barn. You can purchase this piece:

Turtles

SOLD! (September 2011)
A very small piece, 4" x 4", oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. I love turtles, they're interesting with a lot of texture. These seemed to be having a discussion, maybe thinking about what to do for the day.

Momma's Boy

A Brahma baby, Momma's Boy, is a small 4" x 4" oil painting on gallery-wrapped canvas. I saw this little guy in a cattle holding pen. He was with his mom and a few other relatives, waiting for the auction to begin. Hope they're all grazing happily in a big green pasture. This painting can be purchased for $35.00.

New Orleans Cat

This is a New Orleans cat, independent, fearless, confident. He seems to asking "What up?". Many of the shop owners in New Orleans have pets that stay with them all day. This calico cat is a shop owner's pet on Magazine Street--he wanders in and out of the shop, very streetwise. 8" x 8" oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. $85.00

Babes, a Gypsy Vanner

This beautiful Gypsy Vanner stallion is owned by Joyce Christian, who raises Gypsy Vanners in Monroe, Louisiana. It was a thrill to spend several hours learning about Gypsy Vanners, photographing them, and enjoying Joyce's stories. Oil painting on canvas board, 7" x 9", $90.00

Braided

SOLD! (9/03/2011) Braided will make the purchaser's horse-loving granddaughter a great gift! This is a portrait of my Tennessee Walking Horse, Roxie. She makes a great subject for painting. I often braid her hair and loved the contrast between her braided mane and the braided halter.

Pink Horse Running

This painting has a life of it's own. It started as an acrylic painting in blues & whites, then I put it away for what turned out to be a year--just discovered it a few days ago in a pile of incomplete paintings, so now it's an oil painting with lively color, 18" x 30" (canvas). The painting itself seemed to guide me through it, showing it's true colors.

Wildfire

SOLD! (October, 2011)
She comes down from Yellow Mountain
On a dark, flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night

Oh, they say she died one winter
When there came a killing frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down its stall
In a blizzard he was lost

Wildfire. This little painting, 4" x 4", completed on a gallery-wrapped canvas, was done for Daily Paint Works' challenge, painting to a song. The model for this painting is Comet, my new Tennessee Walking Horse. I'm changing his name--love that song!   Wildfire can be purchased for $45.

Life's Reflections

This is a very small oil painting, 4" x 4", on gallery-wrapped canvas completed for Daily Paint Works' "Reflections" competition. I had to work to get Max, our St. Bernard/Collie mix puppy to pose for me, but he finally settled down long enough to get his reflection in the mirror.

Toodles

Toodles is a small oil painting, 8" x 8", on gallery-wrapped canvas. The model for Toodles was a beautiful long-haired, sassy cat, seen in Texas.

New Orleans Arts Market

I just returned from the New Orleans Arts Market, sponsored by the Arts Council of New Orleans. The Arts Market is presented every last Saturday of the month in Palmer Park, very picturesque, and this is my first experience. It must have been 110 in the shade! But, I enjoyed it, made a few sales, met some other artists, and made some contacts. Overall, it was a good experience. I'll be there again in July and August and hopefully throughout the rest of the year. If you're in New Orleans, come visit my booth For the Love of Horses...and all creatures. Hope to see you there!

Almost Saintly

The very beginnings of the drawing, touching here and there with the Prismacolor. I tend to be very impatient and work all over the drawing, back and forth, here and there. Many colored pencil artists work one area completely before moving on. It's whatever is most comfortable for you.

Almost Saintly

At this point the Prismacolor looks a little like crayon, which we don't want. It has a very unfinished look, very scratchy looking

Almost Saintly

bringing the areas up in many, many layers

Almost Saintly

Bug Buddies drawing

This is the initial drawing for Bug Buddies, an illustration for a story at Stories for Children. I'll be working in colored pencil, slowing building the image

midway through drawing

This is nearly finalized, needing to strengthen contrasts & cover the right side
